What is
Neurofeedback Therapy?
Neurofeedback therapy is a brain training program that aims to balance brain waves, thereby improving both mood and brain function.
Each day, our brains are exposed to positive and negative situations, which can shape how we feel or even change how we respond to others.
Neurofeedback gives our brain the chance to respond in a different way or help us to feel better.
Endorsed by the
American Academy of Pediatrics
Neurofeedback is now getting the attention that it deserves. For example, The American Academy of Pediatrics considers neurofeedback as effective as medication for ADHD. The Academy considers neurofeedback as a Level I and Best Supportive therapy for hyperactivity and attention deficit behaviors.
Neurofeedback is an evidence-based therapy, meaning that scientific research supports its effectiveness. This makes neurofeedback an option for those seeking safe, holistic, non-invasive approaches for a wide variety of emotional health concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neurofeedback Training
No! The sensors that we place on the head only read the electrical signals being sent from the neurons in your brain. The brain has continuous brain wave activity, with about 86 billion neurons firing and generating brain waves that fluctuate at various frequencies.
We look at brain wave training as exercising the brain. If you are new to neurofeedback therapy, The Brain Wave Center recommendation is minimum twice weekly, with the initial goal of 30 total training sessions. However, we must emphasize that each individual is different, and recommendations vary.
Maybe. Depending on your provider and plan, some insurance companies will reimburse for neurofeedback therapy. While our services are eligible for FSA/HSA funds, traditional health insurance cannot be used for payment. Accepted forms of payment include Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express, Check, and Care Credit.
We want neurofeedback therapy to be available for all who seek it, so we offer different types of packages and payment plans.
Neurofeedback therapy is considered safe and non-invasive. However, as with any form of therapy, individual responses can vary, and on rare occasions some individuals may experience negative effects. Most negative effects are eliminated after a restful sleep or a minor adjustment to the training protocol. Reported mild and temporary effects:
- Fatigue: Some individuals may feel tired after a session.
- Temporary Increase in symptoms: In some cases, there might be a temporary exacerbation of symptoms before improvement.
- Headache: Rarely, individuals may experience minor headaches during or after a session. We find that eating a balanced meal before or after your session may help.
There could be several factors contributing to the training not being effective as it should be. Hormone imbalances, sleep issues, prescription medication use, nutritional issues, and unstable relationships or environmental factors can all play a role. We offer Functional Medicine Consultations to help you get to the root cause if there is something preventing progress with neurofeedback therapy.
No, Neurofeedback helps you feel like your best self without the weight of your symptoms. It can help you feel like yourself again!
There are certain situations where individuals may not be suitable candidates or should exercise caution. Here are some scenarios in which neurofeedback therapy may not be recommended:
- People 3 years or younger
- Individuals that are not able to watch a computer or television screen for at least 20-30 minutes.
- If you currently wear a full wig, hair piece, or anything that prevents access to your scalp.
- If you have experienced a concussion, head trauma, or had a traumatic brain injury in the last 30 days, you may need to wait a few weeks to be a candidate.
- Severe mental health conditions: individuals with severe mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia or psychosis, may not be ideal candidates for neurofeedback.
- Certain medical conditions: people with certain medical conditions, particularly those affecting the central nervous system, may need to be cautious. It's essential to consult with The Brain Wave Center to assess suitability.
- Uncontrolled substance abuse: individuals with uncontrolled substance abuse issues may not be suitable candidates. It's important to address substance abuse concerns before considering neurofeedback.
- Frequent changes and/or certain medications: some medications can impact brain wave patterns, and individuals on specific medications may need to consult with The Brain Wave Center first to determine compatibility with neurofeedback.
- Certain seizure disorders: individuals with certain types of seizure disorders may not be candidates for neurofeedback, although neurofeedback has been used successfully to help reduce or manage seizures.
- Pregnancy: although neurofeedback is extremely safe, the effects of neurofeedback during pregnancy are not well-studied. It's advisable to consult with your primary care physician.
- If you need emergency medical care.
- If you have an undiagnosed serious mental health issue or are seeking a medical diagnosis for a personality disorder, neurological disorder, epilepsy, etc. Or if there is suspicion of a serious undiagnosed brain pathology, such as a tumor.
- If you are seeking in-patient medical care, such as a rehab center for addiction treatment.
